Default Switching to a VST based rig

so i've been thinking about taking the full plunge into using a laptop as the basis of a guitar rig. Reason being look at this stuff from Audio Damage!:

How cool is that? I know the inherit risks of doing all computer anything i.e. latency, sampling rate, gear being stolen.. but how cool would it be for guitarist in the future to just a basic iBook, some 24-bit, even 32-bit 192khz soundcard and all those cool plugins being triggered and manipulated by a nifty looking midi footcontroller.. I can practically see the wave of the future for guitarist being a midi-based rig.

It's hella cheaper than buying bunch of pedals thats for sure. And I would believe that using just your plain old amp distortion or some distortion pedal on the front of your amp and routing the lines on your soundcard to the effects loop on the amp would just make your rig sound hella dangerous...
