Not sure what drums you've recorded without bottom heads, but if they are nice drums, they shouldn't sound dead flat and lifeless. From my personal experience and what I learned over the years, give it a try and then tell me different.
Friend of mine's drummer had this old Mapex kit that pretty much had no shells. It was like a Rototom kit, with the shell depth being only like 2", but the toms sounded HUGE. I was shocked. Also, it was the best kit to pack into a car ever.
