on the topic at hand. it could well be a fan issue but on the external harddrive itself. certain firewire harddrives have small built-in fans that run intermittently, some of them are kind of fritzy and make other computer items run kinda fritzy as well when they run. eh just throwing something else out to see if that might also be the cause.
