Can jammed alooot. Irmin Schmidt and Czukay would think of some simple arrangement and then Karoli and Liebzeit would add there magic over looong jamming sessions. Czukay and Karoli i would believe were the main cut and pasters editing the sessions to a more amiable length. Everything they did was on a 4-track. If it's Soon Over Babalumba yeah definately they did a huge amount of editing that's when Holger Czukay was getting into his sampling phase and Karoli ditching his guitar to take the lead as singer.
not to toot too much of Can's horns but every live track I've heard from Can sounds extremely distinct from the actual album track. I would definately believe much of their music was just derived from their rhythm section jamming and everyone else improving over that.
