One bassist I recorded had a Galien-Kruger with a 2x12, 4x10, ans 1x18. If I was standing close enough to the stack while he played everything I looked at would get a little blurry. I am not sure how much of that was due to the 18" though.
I've always been a fan of 15's for bass. I feel like 10's don't start to sound good until you are a few yards away from the cab. Tuning is hard to hear when you are close up to a cab of 10's. They do have great definition though.
I think your idea about a subwoofer is right on. But instead of an 8x10 I would say try a 4x10 and 2x15. 8x10's look cool but they are so hard to lug and the two 15's will really help you hear yourself on-stage.
