For bass I used to use a green Big Muff and an old Mu Tron. Set right you could get so many great tones out of the bass (like the riff from Gratitude/Beasties).
For guitar I was using a Boss PS3 Digital Pitch Shifter and Delay Pedal to a Big Muff (Russian) to a Boss DD3 to a Boss GE7 7-Band Graphic Equalizer Effects Pedal to a Boss Hyper Fuzz to a Boss Chorus To a Dunlop Wah. I spent more time playing the pedals than the guitar. Everything had a purpose but I was always tweaking something. My short list was the Muff, a delay, and a wah. That wasn't enough!
So I took a risk with the Line6 PODxt Live Pedalboard. I figured with everything it claimed I should be able to tweak out some favorite presets, save them in an order that makes sense, and deal with the fact that it's not going to sound exactly like all the pedals it emulates. Finally, after a month of tweaking sounds, I have my pedalboard preset and switchable to 95% of what I want. I still haven't found the perfect Big Muff tone but it's close. Besides that I have some interesting analog synth tones and a really good tuner now. So if you are willing to work with the processor AND your guitars AND your amps, you will be able to set up a clean, quiet effect chain that will do about anything you could imagine. (But I still miss all the cool looking little pedals).
