lots of mods are the result of controlled circuit bending often devoping ways of making cheap garbage into an interesting effect, the best of them employing a switch or pot to make this an optional effect.
other mods employ upgrades to more expensive components or remove an unnecessary feature that hurts the overall quality of a cheaper unit.
People do this on anything from microphones to preamps and signal processors.
Oktava mk319's are real popular to mod. There was a lot happening with that when g c was selling them.
