I hope this is a joke, cuz the Dr is in. Now I'm not a doctor yet, but I am a 2nd year medical student and a jazz/blues guitarist, so I certainly feel nostalgic in smoky venues. That's why I'm here to reclaim the smokeless venue - cuz a show is JUST as cool smoke-free as it is smoky, COOLER in fact. If the music isn't enough to keep you high than get the fuck out.
Please, for all that is good, for your friends, family and loved ones, quit.
I'm putting this first because my intention is to encourage you to quit.
TIPS for QUITTiNG:
1. No cold turkey. Use the patch, the gum, meds, therapy/hypnosis - ask your doctor. You have double the chance of making it if you help yourself out. The nicotine products are not actually addictive, because it's not as rapid a delivery - some might not get this, but it complicated physiology and I've already written too much. PM me for more info. And that hypnosis shit fuckin works - the therapist I know who does it has a 98% success rate.
2. Get a buddy. Like going to the gym, it's better if you have someone else to help you out. Plus, it's double the people quitting. Coltrane joined Miles's band when he wanted to quit junk, which is the only thing more addictive than cigarettes (well, maybe meth, but anyway, it's freakin addictive).
3. Get a piggy bank. Fill it with your stoge-money for every cig you aren't smoking, and when you've finally kicked, go on a trip or buy some gear with it. Wouldn't you rather have an awesome Les Paul or kick-ass studio gear than those fuckin cancer sticks?
Now onto health issues. Lung carcinoma is the #1 cause of cancer death in the US, and nearly 90% of Lung Cancers are associated with smoking - thus, SMOKING causes more cancer death than any other single etiology, modifiable or not. BUT, even though 130,000 smokers die of lung cancer every year (150,000 total, with the other 20,000 mostly from environment hazards like asbestos, 2nd hand smoke, and other inhalants), cancer is NOT the most common cause of death related to smoking...
So even if you don't get the cancer, you're even more likely to get HEART DISEASE or STROKE from smoking. And if you're lucky, you'll just get emphysema or chronic bronchitis, which suck so much I don't even know where to begin - go meet someone with COPD, and ask yourself if that's what you want, b/c 1 in 5 smokers get it. Plus that peptic ulcer is getting worse, you smell like shit, and you look like a fuckin moron. Anyone got a light?
Please, for all that is good, for your friends, family and loved ones, quit. Smoking is so unhealthy that if I get an exam question that asks "Which of the following contibutes to [horrible disease]?" and smoking is an answer choice, I'll chose it 99.9% of the time (the only exception of the 1000's of pathologies is ulcerative colitis). I didn't know how bad smoking really is for your health until i got to med school - and I always thought it was bad, which means I have learned it to be really really really bad.
