I don't agree that record stores will be eliminated. I think that the future is safe to support a group of at least a million or so people for whom music is valuable in and of itself- not as an extension to a lifestyle, nor as a novel convenience.
As long as that holds true, I believe that cities and towns without record stores can't broadly exist.
Part of the demand of individuals in this group is to peer with other similarly thinking persons. Starbucks customers, as a group are not those persons. The only thing you will ever be able to say about Starbucks customers as a group is that they all have a demand for bitter coffee. People in the music-is-valuable-by-itself group know that about Starbucks.
