I understand that the Ric isn't the best choice for metal. The Peavey does perform well for metal with a humbucking pickup guitar. If you are really looking for pure metal tone I would say save up for a Laney or something along those lines.
One thing I don't understand is how people think you can't get a heavy tone out of a hollow or semi-hollow. About a year ago we had an Ibanez full hollowbody in studio and we got some brutal tones out of it. Lots of hard rockers use hollow or semi-hollow. For example, the Nuge.
Anyways, back to your problem. I have something very close to the head version of the Valve King. I use it for a heavy rock and soul band right now and it does great. I bought it from a friend who I was in a much heavier (some would say hardcore) band with, and it always performed well.
I've played and recorded a lot of peavey tube amps over the years and the great thing about them is that they are dependable as hell. Even if they've been treated like crap and dropped they still heat up and push air. The bad thing is that many people who buy them are looking for that very specific Marshall, Fender, or whatever tone. They really don't have that in them. They sound like Peaveys. You can dial in a lot of different tones but there is still a certain quality that I hear from listening to them for so many years.
