this is going back 10 years or so,
but i had both an epiphone acoustic, and an epiphone les paul
and they were both good when first purchased
but after a few years, the neck started to move alot
and i ended up refretting both guitars about 3 years after purchase

could've been the way i was playing
but i certainly didn't expect it

right now i have a 78 les paul, and i don't know if its been refretted in the past
but i've had it for about 8 years, and it's not given me any trouble

a lot of people love the sound of those old danelectro guitars... and those things are made from plywood.
This is really the crux of it all. PREFERENCE.

Yes, we all want good purchasing advice and to not buy crap, but the only way to know is to play.

I ask for advice on these forums but take all of it (or as much as I can)with a grain of salt, knowing that my preference will come with use.

Actually, a friend of mine has an Epiphone that was made in Japan; it's the same spec, same wood, same everything (well, the pickups were skimped on, but you have to cut corners somewhere), except it was made in Japan instead of the Gibson factory in Nashville. It sounds, feels, and looks as good as any Les Paul he or I have ever played. Not many come like this; he did find a good one.
