well gibsons go up in value, plus most epiphones use laminates i hear.

and to quote a bunch of reviews i've seen "besides man, it's a gibson! you can't get better quality than that!" i don't endorse that statement, but i've heard it many times.

Not good enough, considering Ive played $1000 Gibsons Les Paul studios much much worse than my $250 G400. Every Epi Ive played aside from the super cheap ones are great, and the expensive ones rival Gibson no question. Well I'm guessing they are the same company, get the same parts from the same place, but have a different name, and less stuff built in the US. Thats the only difference I can see.
