Default weird acoustic pick...

hi i saw a weird/different kind of acoustic pickup (it was on a "jeff buckley in concert at the metro" video, on buckleys acoustic guitar) it was a black pickup, but it covered the entire soundhole, and it gave a very cool peculiar sound to the guitar (or maybe that was just the effects he was using, i dunno...) anybody have any ideas what that pickup was?

thnx

it wouldn't be a soundhole pickup, one that actually covers the whole soundhole. I know some people who do a custom acoustic pickup job cover all the soundhole just for the aesthetics of it all.

Sometimes to avoid feedback live, guitarists will use a soundhole cover. It's supposed to help get rid of low end feedback when you have a loud stage volume and have your monitor cranked up. It helps out a lot when touring.

Yeah that's what I think it was too. It seals the guitar up. It isn't a pickup though, just a stopper to plug the hole.

that's funny; i'd never heard anything about jeff buckley being a particularly loud performer.....but maybe he just liked to hear a lot of himself in the monitors!

ok, yea, this is making sense now, because on that video, when he was using that acoustic pickup/sound hole cover or whatever it is, the song kicked in very loudly, and he wasgoing right up to his amp to kick in the feedback from the guitar, so it indeed was a very loud playing situation

ps its a great video by the way; jeff buckley live at the cabaret metro" a jbtv production worth buying...

i saw it when it origionally ran on JBTV, it was so awesome! then he had jeff on twice to play with his band acoustically. he used to re-run that whenever he got the chance.

You know. I've noticed guitarists that will sometimes play the acoustic with some distortion in sections will use these "corks" live. So that may be the case. The song kicks up a notch and this gives you more control.
Another example is Hank Williams III. He has a big old acoustic that is filled with thick foam (like soundproofing foam) and plays it with a lot of distortion.
Oh yea, thanks for the heads up on the video. I need to find a copy!
