Now, you normally won't find me saying jack turds about Courtney Hole, but I must say this article is a good read.
http://archive.salon.com/tech/featur...ove/print.html I'd copy & paste but it's hell of long. |

Not a bad article. I knew musician made very little but I didn't know they had to go through so much crap to get so little.

note to self, don't make expensive videos or record in someone else's studio if I make it big. A little DIY attitude could save a whole bunch of money for the upstart bands. Record companies are piranhas though and seriously need some wake-up call or some oversight on their business practices. However, law makers are at the tits end of all those RIAA lobbyists.

yep. just another good reason to start your own label, that way you can control how, and how much $ is spent
or... sign to an independent label with less overhead and expenditures, and have your independent label cut a distribution deal with a big label. "there's no business like show business..." |

yea totally... big labels throw and burn a ton of money at/on inconsequential expenses. spending all that money does not guarantee a return investment. in fact, most often, they are spending YOUR money, and they bill you for it. it will be in your contract. They are spending YOUR money! and if your record doesnt sell multi platinum, guess who will be in massive debt? YOU! I have read countless articles on bands who wish they never got signed, for this very reason... If you do sign with a big label, hire a lawyer, a GOOD lawyer, and have him ammend the contract to your benefit, and if the label wont allow you to ammend the contract, dont sign it. A big label contract can be the answer to your life's dream, but if not professionally reviewed and adjusted, it can also be your worst nightmare... Last edited by mikegee; 02-05-2007 at 12:17 PM. |

albini did it a while back; one of my favorite articles ever. he graduated from North Western University with a degree in journalism, this is your evidence that he didn't sleep during class:
