One point that I think is important as a session player is finding out once you are there if you are playing a part that is already written or if the producer says "Here's the key, just play what you feel".
As a session player you are getting paid for your days work and should get this in writing to avoid later complications. If you arrive and the producer has nothing written out and no guide track for you to play to, be wary. When you hear "play what you feel", you need to ask "are you asking me to write a part?" If you are being asked to write a part you may deserve writing credit. Possible points on the record. If you create a part that helps sell the song, you deserve more than 1 day pay. Some people are willing to bite the bullet to get their name out there. Understandable, I've done that. Though it does hurt later if a song you helped create sells a million copies. Be careful!
