When i lived in El Paso me and our bandmates bought a cheap Ranchero at a junkyard, that worked! and used it to travel to gigs, behold:
Ford Ranchero ![]() The only thing that sucked about it, other than looking like escaped convicts while riding on the back with our gear, was that when it rained it created a mini flash flood back there and we had to look around for left over clothes or newspapers (the USA Today was great) someone at the club leftover in order not to drown our gear. We almost saved up enough cash once to buy the actual back cover top thingy to cover the back but by then we were near close to breaking up and splitting the profits of selling that car back to another junkyard... ahhh good times. |

I travelled to a show like a true rockstar once. All my buddies went down to Melbourne for a new years show to play with a band called "Fuck Im Dead". We all lived in Sydney at the time, so they all drove down with the gear, and I had to work. While a 15 hr car trip with a bunch of sweaty dudes drinking and stopping every 20 mins to piss, sounded fun, I opted for the easy button.
After work I got on a plane, flew down, what took them 15hrs took me an hour and a half, got into a cab. Arrived at the venue, got a beer, had a smokey, and went up on stage and played. I felt freakin sweet, like a true big money rockstar!

I hear that Dodge Vans are pretty reliable, as long as you don't let the gas tank go futher past the 1/2 way mark.

My first actual touring experience came in the form of a big white cargo van we dubbed "Falcor" (see Neverending Story). There were about 7 of us crammed into it, including all the gear. The lack of AC and drives through the south and southwest in the middle of summer made it a character builder, aka living hell.
The last tour I was on was in a straight up tour bus. Bunks for everyone, satalite TV, xbox's, fridge, bathroom. The downside being the insanely racist busdriver that came with it and the generators going out every other day while we were in texas and arizona. Nothing like a huge diesel engine bringing the temp in the bus up to around 90 degrees while you sweat yourself to sleep. But the xbox's were cool. |
