anyone have any unusual rehearsal rituals with their band? or anything they do to break up the frustration of rehearsing/writing with a band?
we usually break out our old classic rock chops and jam away into the night with cliche riff after riff... surprisingly, it always helps... playing just for the fun of playing and not having to think/worry about what your doing... 'tis fun. |

Usually if something isn't working in rehearsal or something like that, we'll play a song that we know we can nail. Play that two or 3 times, get tighter and tighter with it, and it gets the juices flowing again. Then we'll back to working on what wasn't happening. Works every time.

I usually do a magic trick. My bassist loves the old coin behind the ear trick.
I find that doing something normal like hanging out watching TV or eating makes things less serious. The way I am set up I have band practice at my apartment so it makes things a bit more comfortable for everybody. I hear that a lot of bands do drugs together. |

oh yeah, one good bong rip before rehearsal and we are just drooling to work out our ideas. though sometimes there is a slight lack of drool. and we love to get loosened up by having our drummer give us drumstick massages. |

Aside from fighting and drugs, if a practice session isn't feeling productive it's important to keep a sense of humor. Sometimes we will all switch instruments and try a few songs. Make sure to trade for an instrument that you play badly if possible. After hearing how bad you sound on the wrong instruments it can help you refocus positive energy. Everyone wants to be the best they can but you have to remember that you play because you love to. If you stop stressing out, it all gets better.
Oh yeah, take a break and communicate. If everyones not on the same page things get messy fast. |

Besides having the stereotypical drummer go on and on after you stop playing for two seconds...we are graced with a bassist that will do the same
haha. Always bustin' out old r&b and oldies rocknroll tunes

In my band, we like to do really stupid stuff. We'll improvise ridiculous-sounding stuff with silly vocals, and our keyboard player will play the samples that he made from 'Tom Goes To The Mayor', and then we'll all laugh really hard and be ready to actually play music (the regular music we play is pretty ridiculous anyway).
