Default I wish somebody would do something about how loud I play my iPod

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060202-6100.html

Somebody has sued Apple because the iPod is "not sufficiently adorned with adequate warnings regarding the likelihood of hearing loss."

Hey moron, that gigantic circular thing just below the screen? It's the volume control. Turn it down.

question: why is it that every time i'm on the el (which is deafening to begin with), people are playing their Ipods so loud that i can hear the digital compression on the hi-hats?

So the question is, do we sue Apple for making the max volume on the iPod too loud? Or do we sue the CTA for making the el so loud that you have to crank up your iPod to hear the hi hats? Or maybe we sue the people who mastered the CD so loud. I'm sure the max SPL you can get from an iPod is materially dependent on the average level of the CD. Or maybe we sue the record label and the artist for "insufficiently festooning the CD package with warnings about little dynamic range there is--and how loud the CD is mastered." Hell, let's sue 'em all!

Seriously, though, I did switch to the shure in-ear buds for just that reason. They attenuate the noise of the train enough that I can actually hear what my iPod is playing without cranking up the volume to pain-inducing levels.

I personally can't stand anything stuck in my ears. Regular 'phones or bust.

how about this rarely-used phrase: personal responsibility! smoking leads to lung cancer? why didn't anyone tell me? what do you mean, it's common knowlege? i want to sue! gorging on lots of heart-stopping, cholesterol-enriched, fried fast food every day and not exercising makes you fat? i want to sue! what do you mean, my coffee is supposed to be hot? i smell a lawsuit; or is that someone's crotch suffering 3rd degree burns? you mean i'm not supposed to rob people with guns? i'm suing! what about people that are hard of hearing, will they sue apple when it attenuates the ipod because it is no longer able to be used at pain-inducing volumes? no one put the gun in your hand, the burger in your stomach, the coffee on your crotch, or the cigarette in your mouth.....you did! i don't care about how many studies you do, its called darwinism; get used to it.

Seriously--if you're stupid enough to turn up your ipod to the level where you can hear it on an el train, you deserve whatever hearing loss you wind up with. Of course, since having an ipod seems to be such a fashion statement these days, I get the impression that a lot of people are bringing their ipods on the el just so they can be seen listening to them. This generation is going to have such a large percentage of people with severe hearing loss by the time we're 40.
