I think that just in modern times heroin use has gone along with doing cool music but even I would seriously debate that. In the olden days heroin is easier to attribute to teh suck Iggy Pop, David Bowie, John Lennon, Allman Brothers, etc etc. just made outstandingly bad or lame albums during their heroin phases only to come out and make awesome albums during their cleanup periods.

I dunno now that I think of it I still think that still holds true. STP, and RHCP in my eyes were always mediocre bands to begin with, leaving heroin still in my opinion didn't make them any better or worse. Brian Jonestown Massacre likewise went through that heroin thing and there music really suffered. The Clash, Blondie, I dunno just a whole bunch of bands just plain sucked or sold out for smack during their heroin phase. Man even the whole Rolling Stones heroin phase the only good thing to come out of that was Goat Head's Soup and that's really frickin barely. All in all I don't think using drugs or a certain kind of drug makes your music any better probably being more lucid and clear thinking in your prime would create that awesome phase.
