Default a music first: #1 U.K. single - download only!

in a demonstration that shows how the times have changed, the group Gnarls Barkley have recieved the first #1 in U.K. history that was only available as a download. how do you feel this will change the industry? would this have happened in the U.S. already if it wasn't for peer to peer filesharing? should soundscan track downloads in the U.S. on free sites?

I don't think p2p has much to do with it not happening in the states. There is just as much of that type of activity abroad. I think the US of A is just a bit slower to catch on to these types of things, and things in general.

As for Soundscan, they keep track of things because they want to keep track of sales. When thinking from a business perspective, I don't see much reason to keep track of downloads on the free sites. Maybe if revenue was being generated by ads and such that somehow went hand in hand with the free download, then maybe. Plenty of reasons for a band to want to know how many free mp3s they got out to people, though.
