That's true. Stealing a big heavy cab or a 90 pound rackmounted bass amp wouldn't be quite so easy as a guitar.

what about padlocking the doors? if the van is yours it could use an extra bit of protection, mount a padlock for extra security. even if it isn't a masterlock, it still is a theft deterrant to some lazy criminals.

Yeah, I've thought about that before. That's actually a good idea and should probably be enough of a deterrent to keep anybody from bothering to try anything.

.......well, except for stealing the whole van and waving a flag by saying "important stuff is inside!" but it would be short work with a pair of bolt cutters anyways. still, not something most crooks would mess with.

also,

spend the $40 a month or whatever the hell it is for a AAA card. You can protect your gear all you want, but don't forget that your van is the most important piece of gear you'll be touring with. Baby it.

yea, i heard that the guys from the junior varsity had to replace their van about 3 times in less than a year......talk about bad luck! the AAA service is worth it's weight in gold esp during the winter (batteries dying, black ice, getting stuck in the snow, etc). good point gearjunkie!

There is a TV built into my van, and yesterday I figured out what switch turns it on. Hanging out in the back seat of the van watching TV is actually kind of fun. Probably not when there are a bunch of guitar cabs and drum cases two inches from you, though.

yea telemundo kind of looses it's kitch factor after a rack case slams in the back of your skull when someone hits the brakes too quickly.

theres some pretty good car alarms out there nowadays, ala "Lojack"; with silent alarms, that trigger the alarm to the alarm company, and they have your vehicle on GPS tracking, and they call the police straight to the location. my buddy has this on his truck, and it works well. its a small price to pay, it could probably even lower your insurance rates by having it. yea, it cost some money, but so does replacing all your stolen gear...
