I like to use flat wound strings, the feel is really good to me. Than one day, I seen ground wound strings. This is the perfect cross between flat and round wound strings. Flat wound are not as bright of a sound as round wound. Ground wound is a great balance between the two, with a smooth feel and a decent sharper tone.

Bass can sound cool with really old strings.

I agree that realy old strings sound good for most stuff. As for which string is best; It's seems that all of the round wounds sound about the same if you get mediums or lights.

I don't really like the sound of brand-new bass strings, but I hate the sound of really old dead bass strings. I like them to have a little bit of brightness. It seems like a lot of serious bassists like them dull, though--a really good player with whom I used to be in a band hated changing his bass strings because of the new sound and he half-joked about tying the new ones to his bumper and driving around on some gravel roads before putting them on.

Hey Whoopysnorp,

You might really like the Fender Nylon Tape wound strings. Its basically a flat steel core with a nylon wrapping. They are not as bright as regular roundwounds, but they dont ever get dull sounding. They are also easy to clean and extremely comfortable to play. If you dont like the flatwound sound, they also make a taperwound version which is more like traditional rounds. I love the tape wound strings, they sound very unique.

Hmm, interesting idea. I'm not sure I necessarily like the sound of it, but I'm intrigued. Do they feel weird? It sounds like it'd feel more like playing an upright bass than an electric. I'm a roundwound guy all the way, personally.

yea, flatwound strings have never felt right to me. and when they break, the ribbon that is wound against the strings can cut you pretty easily. be carefull!

Plus, that sound of fingers sliding on roundwounds is part of the sound of a guitar or bass in my opinion. Some people try really hard to get rid of it but it doesn't bother me.
