I'm a huge fan of the blackfinger. I like dirty bass and I think this works great for very loud music. Carrie Vinarsky always used one in Coughs, and I think that was a key element for their live shows.

I know the digitech bass squeeze is terrible, as is the built in compressor on a hartke. completely useless. I've heard good things about the whitefinger too.

On the studio side I'm a big 1176 fan, I've had some great tones even out of the LE plug in version.

I would hope a bass sounds good through 1176 LA's. I was more thinking about the live show pedal, but studio use is also very important.
For recording I use a Valley People Dynamite Compressor. I think its a great bass compressor, but don't have anything nicer to A/B it to. |

I've been hearing great things about Robert Keely's compressor:

The best bass compressor in my opinion is the onboard dual-band compressor in the Trace Elliot SMX series heads (i believe the same technology was used in the newest TE amps) i think there's also a pedal version of it, but it's hard to find.
But that compressor certainly squeezes my balls together when I plug in my bass. (wohoo my first post!) |

My DBX 166XL has been working out pretty well. One out for the amp & one out for the board.
