never built one, but they do make the room stand still. everyone sits there and looks shocked.

I didn't build it but I used to play on one quite a bit. A friend back home had a lot of free time, and gathered a jug, washboard, and built the bass. It was a hoedown! Hootenany!

I built one years ago. It wasn't the 'standard' construction though. I didn't puncture a hole in the top to poke the stick through, instead I rested the stick on the top of the tub and pulled the stick forward and back to change pitch (increasing and decreasing tension of the string). I used a flat-wound string from an upright bass.

There is an awesome band that plays outside of the flying fish market in Dowtown Seattle. Their washtub bass sounds great, great combo with a grainy fiddle.
Talk about a hootenany!
