I went with the low action for a long time. Over the last few years though, it's been slowly raising. The tone is simply more awesomertastical.........just ask the king of the 9-inches-above-the-neck strings, SRV.

On bass too though? The lower it gets the softer you have to play. I thought some of the really good bassist play really softly.

Thumbs up

I also like a high action. Really is a more full, richer sound with high action. Not 100% sure if it really affects the sustain, but IMO it does, for the better. It is indeed more difficult to play, but I seem to play a little crispier with higher action.

Having your strings real low can definitely kill your sustain because your strings will buzz on your fretboard and you lose some of the vibration. On the other hand, with some basses (like my Peavey T-40) there is still more sustain than you know what to do with, so it's not really a big deal. Personally, I'm kind of a wuss in the finger department, so I do like to have the strings low-ish.

I like it medium. It depends on the song and how I play. Sometimes I like to really dig in, but sometimes I paly with a light touch.

Lowest action I have played was a Musicman my bro-in law has. When I got that bass on my hands it was almost playing itself.

You want low action? I'll give you low action. This guy's name is Johnny Skilsaw, and he attached a Moog Liberator to his bass. He plays the bass with one hand and the keyboard with the other. It really rules.
