Default hofner ripoffs

so, i think i'm realizing that i will never (well at least not for the next couple of years) save up enough cash to get the hofner bass i've been lusting after since random other expenses keep popping up... and i need a new laptop before i need a new bass. so, i've been thinking about getting one of the hofner copies... the reviews i've read say that the actually body isn't all that bad but just the electronics are crappy. so... if i replace those, then it would be decent, no? does anyone know how those things are attached to the body? it seems that since it's a hollow body that may be pretty difficult to remove and work on, etc... is worth even trying? Are there any sources for replacement hofner electronics, or something that is better than the factory installed ones on the copy? The one i had my eye on was the Jay Turser, but if someone knows a better one, please let me know.

Yea I've heard good things about that Jay Turser. One of the members of Chicago's "The Bon Mots" uses both an original Hofner and a I believe a copy as well. I definately want to use that original on some recordings! It really does sound incredible live. You may want to try to contact them about what re-make they use.
