sounds like you would have to get good at sticking out your middle finger (bringing pinky and index pinching to thumb and forefinger pinching together) in order to pass the pic back and forth; which sounds a lot easier than it actually is, i'm sure. |

I just saw NoMeansNo on Wednesday, and as I mentioned that guy plays with a pick and gets a great sound. It's interesting how much his bass playing approach is similar to traditional rock guitar playing. He plays two and three-note power chords sometimes, he plays with a pick, and he even appeared to be using a guitar amp. I couldn't identify the head but it was running into a Marshall 4x12, and his sound was a lot more midrangey and less bassy than you'd get with a traditional Ampeg fridge or something. I'd like to hear what he sounds like playing with fingers in a more traditional way, actually.

Noob here with a mostly jazz and some blues/r&b/and rock on the side. I play mostly with fingers, but occasionally use a pick (a real one or since I'm Canadian - a loonie/toonie depending on what's in my pocket
)Two players I've learned a lot from are: Jaco Pastorius (he must have 7 fingers on each hand) Steve Swallow (the most amazing jazz bass sound while using a PICK!!!) |

I'VE NOTICED THAT PLAYING WITH MY FINGERS FEELS MORE NATURAL AND IS MORE "PURIST". all the best bassists i've seen or heard live play with their hands. picks are gaj.

i personally have been playing bass with my fingers for over 35 yrs. some of the faster tunes you have to condition your wrist. you cant do slap and pop with a pick or funk if thats what your playin. hope i dont offend anyone but real bass players play with their fingers. john entwhistle - marcus miller - i can go on and on. sorry. if any one out there is listening also dont buy behringer speaker cabs . bugeras suck. lot of players havin trouble blowin speakers. have 4x10 cab. 1000 watts. HA!.that sucker couldnt handle 300 . pow there it went. SWR OR AMPEG . jimbo the bassman.
