it may have to do with the dave ghrol effect....loud = good (i like dave ghrol's drumming btw, but most people seem to forget dynamics in rock music).

you know..like "short man's complex" - they have to be the loudest in the room to keep their ego enlarged; like they're trying to win a loudness competition that nobody else knows of...

most of them think that it sounds better that way. Even when they are using a Valvestate... which sounds better off.

as far as heavy hitting drummers, im right there with them but i feel that if your are hitting super hard then you are making use of your wrists enough.

i think the drummer from Can had it right. he was jazzy but hard as shit when it needed to be. you just gotta feel it.

yea, i appreciate drummers who have a good grasp of the variation of dynamics. too loud all the time or not loud enough all the time isnt drumming, its just hitting things with sticks. drumming is the ability to be simultaneously loud on some drums/cymbals, and medium, and also soft on other drums/cymbals. when i dont hear any variation in dynamics, it sounds like a machine playing a sequenced beat, lacking...

i couldnt agree more. the old statement still rings true: your band is only as good as your drummer.

absoloutely, and a good drummer is hard to find. a great drummer can write their own ticket.
