Default Concert drum for kick

I just started playing with a band where the drummer plays this huge concert bass drum (like 27 inches). It sounds hilariously great. The heads for it are like $60. I can't wait to get it into the studio. Anybody else ever use something like this?

I once saw a Fred Astaire movie with a scene where he was tap dancing while playing this drum "kit" which included basically just an assortment of concert drums, including a concert bass drum on the floor. During the routine he would literally "kick" the bass drum - no pedal.

Can anyone think of what film this was??

Some of my details may be off, it was about 16 years ago that I saw this - though I'm fairly certain it was Fred Astaire...

Mike Zelenko was the drummer for material issue; the drummer for hushdrops has a floor tom as big (if not bigger) than most drummers' kick. he's a great player.
