I use an Octave 219 and that mic works well. The best results that I had was with my Rode NT1 with the stand behind the drummer right over his head. I use this position when there is a single mic. This spot is good because it is what the drummer hears. Usually drums are pointed in that direction anyway.

If you haven't already seen Okatava Mod check it out. He does some cool things to those nice old mics, like changing out the grills and removing the switches to open up the sound. The switch was problematic on the 319 I used to use.
