not to get too nit-picky about it... but the drums on when the levee breaks are slowed down on tape, so that's not actually how they sound. Although it sounds amazing, it's not the natural drum sound

Props to whoever brought up the Bad Plus records.
Brian McTernan does a lot of young rock stuff but his drum room sounds pretty incredible. Check out Thrice - The Artist In The Ambulance

That was me Soren! Thanks for the props! Props back to you; game recognize game. The recordings alone are outstanding. Producer/engineer extrodinare Tchad Blake was at the console for most of them. He uses SansAmps on everything, except guitar! He and Mitchell Froom have been doing that since they recorded Los Lobos and Elvis Costello records. Thanks for that insight on the Bonham "Levee" sound.

I ran across a guy who had a set he made himself using Keller shells. Sound as good or better than any other kit I have heard and cost probably 1/2 the price of a DW kit. Of course results will vary depending on your skills at doing stuff like this. Also head selection and tuning is key to a good sound. You can make any drum sound good if you have a good head, the drum is round (not warped) and the bearing edges are in good condition.

Sweet! Great pedals, very well built; fun stuff! When I talked to a few people Tchad's worked with they all say "Yea, he LOVES that SansAmp thing. Uses it on EVERYTHING. Stand-up bass, snare, blocks, Keys, EVERYTHING." 4-trackers I know used to use it when mixing tracks down to fatten them up.

The two best drumkits I've ever heard/played were a 70s Camco kit and a custom Ayotte kit. It helped that the kits were tuned to perfection. Ultimately they both sounded amazing.

I have to throw up a third hand for Bad Plus and David King. As a side note, it's also worth checking out another one of his bands, Happy Apple.

Don't know if they're the best sounds I've ever heard, but I was recently watching some stuff from Seb Rochford - his kit (including the way he plays it) sounds pretty awesome.
