I've been watching the Muppet Show lately. Animal's sticks bend.

imagine how many cymbals he can break with these bad boys
The cymbals are the main thing I worry about; he can break all the sticks he wants. He's broken one set of Zildjian A Mastersound hi-hats, a 19 inch A Custom crash, a 15 inch A Custom crash, a 16 inch A crash, and I can't remember all what else. That's gotta get expensive. And he was once unemployed for an entire year.

I forgot how difficult it is to show sacasm on the internets. I think maybe a really light pair of sticks, may help. The less weight they have, the less force they create and pressure they disperse on the object being beaten. Same force, less damage give it a try, it sounds like you got nothing to lose except for more cymbals and drum heads.

Eh, I've been trying to get him to alter his drumming habits to be less destructive for about as long as I've known him. I don't think it's gonna happen. He's started playing guitar now, but fortunately he's not so hard on his strat as he is on his kit!

Oh yeah, he's not the drummer in my band either--just a friend whose band I've recorded a few times and played some shows with. His style wouldn't really work out for what I like to do.

Well, I guess this fits into the old dog and new tricks catagory. Have you ever asked him to settle the F*%K down, and stop destroying his drums? It may help, or fuel him to be more destuctive, but as I said before you got nothing to lose except for more cymbals and drum heads.

I break sticks continuesly. Mostly because of the way I play I use the rims alot and the edges of my cymbals I enjoy the sounds better mostly for accent or impact effect. But I'd much rather break a stick than a head or crack a cymbal. I use to never break sticks but since I play heavier music now I go thru sticks like nothing. But hey somethings gotta give.

I would never use unbreakable sticks. When somethings gotta give you'd much rather it be a stick wouldn't you?

Quite right. A piece of wood is a lot easier to come by than a sheet of brass precisely hammered to provide the most musical overtones possible.

Default break it! break it! break it!

i think breaking sticks is normal, not that ya wanna break them, but hey, sticks were made to eventually break, or else, like, all the stick manufacturers would go outta business... i notice sometimes though, i have a few pairs of sticks that WONT break, i abuse them continuously, and still they are perfect...now THAT is mysterious... hehe

yea, that's called "planned obsolescence," it's built to get you by, but fail within a given time frame so you can go out and buy more. lots of companies use this busnes model for lightbulbs, vehicles, software, etc.
