Roto toms are pretty weird. Those are the drums you tune by spinning the head. I guess how it works is the rim is on a thread like a big old screw. Can be quite intresting but only when played by a really good drummer, i.e. my personal favorite drum master Tatsuya Yoshida.

yeah, Roto drums can be one of two things: very good, or very, very, very bad. I personaly prefer the rims of the roto toms, the coolest is you can actually tune them by turning them (as discussed above). you can get good percussive tones from the rims of the roto toms.

You can find rototoms on a lot of Rush songs. They are a tunable percussive pitch. They do not resonate long being only a heads on a rim but they can add interesting percussion.

If you're a Mr. Bungle fan, there are two points in the song 'Stubb (a Dub)' on their self-titled album where there is a roto-tom fill right before an evil funky riff. If you know the song I'm sure you know what I mean.

Hey mikegee, tell the drummer not buy the roto toms. Its very difficult to find a tasteful section in the song where they would fit. And you gotta be a slave to the song.

Tim "Herb" Alexander used them a ton on early primus stuff. The "Tales From the Punchbowl" record has a ton of em. He plays a big ridiculous drumset, and primus is weird (and amazing), they're a niche for sure.

Also...

If you're familiar with one Terry Bozzio you may have seen his hats made out of roto tom "shells". They are incredible, and they add a great tone color to "klangfarbenmelodie", with... is the definition of the name I suppose.

If he's already bought them, tell him to make hats.

Like Rayden hats.
