i do think this board should have a place for mods

this is all my opinion though
57s aren't that expensive...just get another one specifically for modding and try it. It really does sound a lot better for certain purposes after the mod, especially on loud stuff like percussion. I haven't tried my modded one on guitar--I haven't used a 57 on a guitar cab for a long time since I got my Sennheiser e609 and MD421--but I bet it's superior there as well. Basically any loud stuff is a good place to put a transformerless 57.

i should look into this, but I bet there is a mic out there with a very similar coil setup and a crap transformer. That's all I mean. I bet there are dynamic mics for $40 or less out there that fit the bill.

Well that's a possibility. If you find one, post about it! That would be cool.

these four seem like good contendors for some tweaking:

AKG D22S:

CAD KBM412:

Shure PG57:

Sennheiser e609s:

Just wish I had the money and wherewithall to know how to tweak them.

Man, I'm not so sure about that e609--I have one, and it is pretty tightly assembled. I wouldn't know how to get it apart. For that matter, I highly doubt it has a transformer in the first place, so the SM57 mod wouldn't really be a possibility (most dynamic mics don't use transformers, and the e609 is so small I don't see where it would go). Plus, it sounds a lot nicer (for guitar applications anyway; I haven't tried it anywhere else) than the SM57 to start with in my opinion.

Actually, none of these will work, because they don't have transformers. Most dynamic mics don't have transformers. i'll look around for some cheap ones that do.
