Anyone heard this thing? At the price it's going for, it'd be great for a cheap toy (rather than over $300 for a Moog/Big Briar theremin)

A toy is about right. It's built like a crappy remote control and sounds about as good. Save up and get the Moog one.

It's probably worth the price as a noisemaker. Built-in delay!
The Moog is the real deal and the way to go if you actually want to play notes though. |

I give it a "Meh" out of 5. Then again, i'm a snob and hated the AirFX as well.

wow guys, thanks for the response, w/o being able to control volume. (pitch only), I knew it had some inherent limitations, but the sounds it makes isn't even that good, eh?

I've messed with some cheap theremins and a volume pedal works just as well. For me it is actually easier.

I think I saw Ben Folds Five using the Hiwatt theremin in concert quite a few years back. Could be mistaken' but I remember the white globe-ular looking thing.

does anyone know how difficult it is for someone to make a moog theremin using one of those kits? i may be interested in getting one, but i don't want to go over my head. i'm moderately good at soldering; i need more practice and a better gun to do finer work.

Ironic, I was just talking about buying the finished Moog unit. The kit usually isnt much cheaper, and I don't have the time or inclination or temperment to put one together. I mean, I probably could, if I was in a cabin in the woods, free of distractions and blessed with time, but there's already been one Unabomber.
Beginning solderers could probably do it if they were careful. One way to get an idea on how much effort it would take is to try picking up a cheaper Paia kit for their Theremax...if you crash and burn on that project, then you're only out a hundie or so (if you don't get the case). -r Last edited by warmowski; 10-13-2006 at 12:25 AM. |
