Default On a quest for Pink Floyd tone

Hi guys n gals.

I have set my self on a quest to get as close to the pink floyd tone from pulse as possible.

I believe that gilmore used a strat with Dg20 emg's and a custom 100 Hiwatt to get the backbone of his sound.

Well the Hiwatt is waaaay out of my budget.

I was considering a fender blues junior with possibly a celestion vintage 30 driver instead of the stock one as iv read many reviews sayin that it gives more warmth and bass defition to the amp while maintaining the highs.

In you opinion would this be a good amp to build that sort of tone upon, i dnt have a really big budget for the amp, i dnt really want a billion settings and ten thousand knobs all im interested in is just a decent tube amp with 1 good clean channel. My Biggest concern is that the amp isn't as 'dark' sounding as id like it to be, but it has got warmth and good treble, maybe a little bit harsh but im thinking the speaker will fix it :/

So, what r your opinions on the matter, do you reckon it would be a good move or i should be better off getting something else instead??

cheers

the hiwatts he was using were EL34 based. the blues junior, although at a lower wattage, wont sound exactly like those, but you can mimic the sound a bit.

Swapping out a vintage 30 with the stock Jensen wont really do so much to the sound as Gilmour's Hiwatt was pushing the speakers to the point of breakup. Putting 15 watts into a 60 watt speaker isn't going to do anything to the speaker.

If anything, I'd recommend trying a Celestion Alnico Blue. It's a 15 watt rated speaker and will get the breakup you're going for.

Another thing to look into would probably be some sort of EQ pedal so you can mess with the tonal variations of the amp, as it doesn't have a large range of tonal knobs.

Hmmm.
I use to use a Pro Jr. (same basic amp, less the reverb and tone controls). I would definitely say that another speaker will help, BUT don't bother replacing the internal one with a nicer one. ANY internal speaker in those amps will eventually cause issues like microphonics and rattling that are not good when you turn up.
What to do? I found one of those little Marshall 'micro' cabinets they made for their 'micro-stack' amps in the 80s. I lucked out, I found one made in the UK, it's red, and real cool-looking. Anyway, its' cheese-dick 10" Celestion was blown out, so I replaced it with an Eminence Li'l Buddy, a hemp-cone speaker.
No fuss, no mush. Great tone. I simply unplugged the POS internal Fender speaker (they use a 1/4" jack, but it's in an awkward place up in the chassis), stacked the Pro Jr. on top of the micro cab (almost a perfect fit), and cranked the amp. Unreal tone. I finally ditched the Jr. because of reliability issues, but I've kept that cabinet. They are back to making those micro amps again (Chinese), you can find the cabs for sale on the internet.
MUCH better than dealing with an internal speaker in those amps. Something to think about...

well, gilmore used 4 Hiwatt custom 100's through WEM 4x12 cabinets.

Im not too fond of using a combo amp as a head though, cause its not the ideal setup for me + it will def push me over budget. Also the Alinco blues are awesome speakers but they cost nearly half what the amp alone costs so it would not be a viable option for me.

The blues jr = $499
Alinco blue = $249.99
Vintage 30 = $110.99

I was planning on gettin a good clean sound like this from the amp, speaker n a strat with either the emg's or dark sounding pickups, possible SD alinco II: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuG_316cPMY

As far as the overdriven sound goes, id like it to be creamy n super full of harmonics and overtones for those expressive bends. something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yeiz5wENoio

There is no way i can use any amp's natural overdrive though, not at those volume levels at home, so i was planning on getting somp boxes for that. Possible a good OD or big muff with a delay pedal and a compressor.

I cannot go any higher than 500 on the amp, in fact if i change the speaker ill do it at a later date.

dunno, maybe there are some better amps in that price range??

Imo the Hiwatt's have more overtones and sound darker that the fender. Although they r clean amps, in terms that they have tons n tons of headroom.

It's "Cornford", they're a Brit boutique amp, and their cheapest model is the 5-watt Carerra, which lists for $2000.00 in the US. They have one at GuitarX.
$500 isn't going to buy you anything with any build quality. You haven't said how loud you're going to need to get this amp. Are you in a bedroom studio? Or in a garage with a live drummer? That little Fender got a great tone in the bedroom, but turning it up to keep up with a drummer in a blues band made it sound like crap. You need to qualify your needs and save up some money.
