Default Pickups

So what would happen if someone wired together a triple coil or a quad coil pickup? Route out a big hole in the guitar and make it have split coil switches. Would it just become a big magnetic, sound with little definition? Any theories or experiments on beyond single and double coil?

I bet it would have a really hot output with a muddy high end. Also could have lots of phasey things happening as different parts of the string vibrate differently and the outputs are summed together.
