I've heard some clips of it, and it sounds pretty good. It has a kind of hot-rodded Marshall thing going on in the lead channel, and the cleans are decent. Like any cheap tube amp, it can sound a little fizzy. At the price, it's probably worth checking out.

A 100 watt 2x12 tube combo for 6 bills is a deal and a half. Another amp you'd wanna check out would be the Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12. Great clean sounding amp with some "overdrivey" tube breakup. Not as over the top as that peavey would be.

Believe it or not... I know, I know... relax... I'm about to tell you about a Crate amp. So, before I say anything, just shut up and let me explain.

Crate V3112

This little amp SMOKES. It's 4 EL84's for 30 watts of Class A power (just like an AC30). This is a 1x12 combo with spring reverb. It sounds almost like what would happen to the Hot Rod if it had Vox's power section in it. 30 watts of class A power doesn't sound like a lot next to 100 watts of A/B power (in that peavey head) but believe me, 30 watts class A is FREAKIN LOUD AS HELL. Also, this would be an awesome little recording amp.

Also, if you're looking for a head, get that little Epiphone Valve Junior head. I can't say enough good things about it. You know why? because it's 5 WATTS AND IT'S AMAZING.

Thanks, GearJunkie, that was some primo-good advice on tube amps.

Can i get your opinion one more time? when you play the crate and the peavey and the epiphone tube amps, do you notice a different noticeable quality of sound or tone? not so much? hardly noticeable? i guess i should get down to the local music store and try em out, but i know from reading your past posts, you are on top of the tube amps, so in your opinion, do they come close in sound quality to say, Fender tube amps?

thanks again

the crate, peavey and epi stuff would fall into the same realm. basically they're all amps looking to do a good clean and an over the top overdrive (with the exception of the epiphone which is pretty much all overdrive). newer fender amps are much more clean sounding than anything else. As loud as they get, they're still clean toned. If you're looking for something with a little variety in tones, don't go with the fenders (except those new SuperSonic amps which sound incredible).

just my opinions.

i must concour gearjunkie; the valve junior is a force to be reckoned with - espically after you change out the stock tubes and pair it with a decent cab and speaker. it will blow your socks off at how loud 5 watts of class a power can be.

I got one to give as a Christmas present later on, and I tried it out yesterday (just to make sure it works ). It's pretty cool. It has more crunch than I expected--it actually distorts quite a bit when it's turned all the way up. It gets loud enough to feed back when going through my 4x12 with Greenbacks. I'd be curious to hear it with decent tubes in it.
