My first pick is the Epiphone Valve jr.. It's a loud 5 watts and has great tone. Also the Ashdown G20R is a solid amp with good tone.

Hi guy, New to the forum. ( Came from musicplayers guitar forum. ) I would almost want to say you'd be stupid to do that... Here's why: I don't know your level of skill yet, So I can't be sure. The Epi VJ's are ONLY WHAT YOU NEED, Meaning that it can get very frustrating to dial in tones, And/or get the volume you want while doing it. ( It is meant to be a practice amp, But if you're like me you WANT to hear what your playing. ) Now... If you're looking for something under 150 and for a practice amp ( That can basicly do it all ) go for a Line6. Those little Spyder amps get loud ( I owned one. ) And had pretty good tone. It was my second Amp, I was satisfied with it untill my taste for tone upped too many notches. The VJ is going to require an almost -extreme- knowlegde of tubes and pedals to become even remotely versital. ( I own the head, And 200 dollors worth of preamp tubes and power tubes, As well do I own several pedals. ) Trust me on it, Go for the solid state just because It has the Umph, And the ability.

Last I checked the Valve Jr. had ONE knob on it.

It's not that hard to make that amp versatile.

No no dude, You mist understand me. I own the amp, I know what it has and all. BUT tube from tube, The sound impact is extreme. Along with the amp I bought 200 dollors worth of preamp and power tubes, Trust me on the impact of tones. ( IE Playing blues through a 12AT7 sounds much better then that of a 12AX7, Not so much the gain factor but the flavor of the tube. ) And, I'll agree to the second statement with a twist: It takes basic knowledge to know how a pedal will impact an amp, MORE SO an amp withoutr an EQ of any sort.

Default Roland Cube 15X

Just wanted to throw a vote in for the Roland Cube 15X. My wife got me one for Christmas, I love having the AUX line in jack to connect my ipod in while I'm playing. The clean is just that, clean. The distortion options aren't too shabby either. She bought it off of Musician's Friend for $99.
