hehe, good call. I've been hearing so-so reviews about it. It seems to be the opposite of what A History of Violence tried to do which is present the actual physical manefestation of violence not just for the sake of irony but for the sake of some more broader general theme.
It seems wanton violence in this movie was used to say aha! jokes on you the audience sucking up this sh*t eventhough it's a farce on this genre. The Cronenberg film said more without delving as deep into the whole physicality of the thing as this Hostel movie. I mean Hostel has more tying it to the whole image of the Passion of the Christ (i.e. torture as redemption... who gets tortured here in this movie? us watching it and the stupid jocks in the movie) at least the Passion had a basis that the Christ figure was redeemed but in Hostel the idiotic jock figure is redeemed with entirely no basis for that act, and we we're just left wondering why we spent 8 bucks on this movie eh. |

I saw it. I never thought i'd say this, but it would have been better if they dropped 20-30 minutes of breasts and replaced it with better gore. When i see a splatterflick, i want pulled entrails. This just didnt deliver.

Right. The movie didn't create any kind of sympathy between me and the "victims". When the violence started happening - I didn't care. I thought the characters got what they deserved, honestly. There was no innocent or "pure" person, all the characters were using / taking advantage of somebody.
First 45 minutes is pure T & A. It gets nasty after that, not scary, just nasty. It should also be known that Hostel has no plot whatsover, one must figure out for themselves what is going on, and what malevolent forces are at work (it isn't that hard). But you probably won't care enough to do that, if you watch it. I saw a history of violence and I enjoyed it a lot, it's a way better movie than this garbage. Really. Go see that if you haven't seen it. |

hahah I was thinking the same thing about the breasts..actually..
It all amounted to masturbation fodder for the teens. You especially don't need to pay to see them, if you've been looking at them all day for free. |

I didnt find it nasty at all. I miss times when movies had a real gore. Anyone remember Intruder? Guy gets a band saw stuck into his mouth, and then his head is cut in half, right through his teeth and jaw. THAT'S what i want. They goriest part of Hostel was the Eye popper, and really, it's been done. I'd still rather watch Bad Taste. |

after seeing the first saw, i was done for modern gore/horror. the genre is kind of dead; no pun intended.

yea, a lot of people did....hence the sequel. but can you admit that the acting of danny glover and carey elwes was terrible, espically toward the end? everyone in the theater was laughing.....hard. that's not a good sign.
