Default Gearwire Crosstalk Episode 029 - Brass Ensemble Listening Test

Ok, so just like we did for strings in episode 028 we did a listening test for brass sounds in episode 029. Once again here are the products we ran the straight MIDI through:

Software Libraries

- Sonivox Muse
- Vienna Symphonic Library
- East West/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver Edition

Hardware Synths

- Yamaha MU100R
- Yamaha Motif
- Roland XV5050

Watch the show here:

Vote for your favorite and if you wish to take a guess at which is which drop a line here.

Results will be available in the next episode of Gearwire Crosstalk.

Default I like 1

I'm a guitar player, so I'm no expert on horns or samplers for that matter. However, number one just sounded the most lifelike to me. Similar to what I've heard from an actual orchestra or during a film score.

Ugh...anyone who votes for number 4 should be shot to death with a water pistol. I think I'm going to go lay down and take a nap in the train tracks real quick...

Oh yeah, I was laughing when I first heard if on cross talk then Mike said "I am just stunned by the realism" and I lost it.

Tried not to let the reverb sway my choice, seemed more prevalent with the brass for whatever reason.

Well, it looks that the turn out for voting will be a little higher than the last time, I'm glad, I voted number 1 because it sounded more dynamic (it wasn't really dry, so I'll guess is EWQL). I will never use a brass ensemble, I'll create it by myself with different intstruments, but the test will give a lot to think about, the qualities of the samplers/romplers, how much detail was given in each s/r, etc.
The other 2 I liked were the 2 other that have a vote, so numbers 3 and 5.

Again, dagosto, if you publish the midi file.....

Cheers,

Roderick.

#1 sounds the most authentic, at least with this particular MIDI piece. #3 is a reasonably close second. I'm betting that, just like last time, #1 is VSL and #3 is EWQLSO Silver. #3 has more natural ambience and panning and has the characteristic bite of the EWQLSO brass instruments, where #1 is more clean and restrained.

Certainly seems likely that 2, 4, and 6 are the hardware romplers...
