Very curious.

Welcome Jason. I'll take a crack at your question.

Real-time software effects and instruments are probably the biggest reason there is a need for ultra fast and well designed machines. They are a big draw on system resources. A multi-track session with lots of tracks and plug-ins can easily overload an average machine. Often folks in our field will have to run that along with a movie file which can further add to the load.

I am just scratching the surface with this. There are many other reasons that we need power. In this thread we were discussing how the new Vista OS might be a further draw on our precious system resources.

Gotcha...
Im "in the field" too... also doing it on the computer, so I understand that DAW's get overloaded!
I guess I should have been more specific...
What kind of track / plugin / virtual instrument count are you looking at?

I've been known to use up to 60 tracks while running a few effect busses and lot's of eq, plus synched video playback. This was an in depth foley/adr project. I usually keep my music projects under 20 tracks.

Oh...
Understood!
That is a heavy track count indeed.

Good luck with your new system, I have learned alot from reading the threads!
