does anyone know where to get a build your own synth kit? i've heard that radio shack used to sell them in the early-mid eighties, but i've never seen one (with the possible exception of the theremin....but that doesn't realy count). how much would one cost? would it be easy to make?

I'm pretty sure you can find a kit. Right off the bat a google search revealed this:

This electronic musician article filled me with delusions of soldering together a giant wall of analog synth modules:

if you plan on building a big ole' modular unit from scratch...prepare yourself for a lifetime achievement award...that's what you'll get at the end of the tunnel. Murphy's Law is a b*tch and it can honestly take a lifetime to build one. Smaller units..go for the Paia kits...they even have scheme's for a vocoder i believe

here's a cool little program i've been using on and off lately to create some simple synths and some cool little vst effects:
http://www.synthmaker.com/ its kinda simple, very nice looking, but you can do some nifty things with it without having to solder any crap onto a real life PCB board. |
