Default Name that synth sound!

Or rather don't just head on over to this page:
http://www.synthmania.com/Famous%20Sounds.htm

This guy has a nice page setup to identify a couple of those famous synth sounds used in famous songs. Of note now I know which sound I loathe it's that Emu Emulator II Shakahuchi sound... that world music flute preset is crap.

Ha!

But without that Shakahuchi preset, how can every advertising agency in the western world properly set the stage for a wise man/mystic character?

Without that preset, how can you cue the Vaguely Buddhist Monkish character so he may deliver his wisdom (that leads of course to buying some product.)

Try to do that originally with new sounds and images and it will only confuse the audience, annoy the client and get you fired...

I've gotten a similar sound with a cheap recorder (the wind instrument kind), a small piece of paper, and tape. Use the paper to partially cover the sound hole
and you should be able to make that grade school instrument sound more rustic. It also messes the tuning to interesting effect.

Very cool site though. I like how he describes the contruction of some of the sounds.
