What is one of your favorite cover songs that has been done?
What did they do to make the cover interesting or different than the original? If you could release a cover what would it be and how would you do it? |

I like The Breeders take on "Happiness is a Warm Gun". They set a dark vibe with minimal instruments and female vocals. It's an interesting take. I have other favorite covers but for some reason this one is in my mind at the moment.
I like covering Anyway You Want It by Journey. I slow it way down and sing it in a low register. Kind of a cross between Nick Cave and Tom Waits. It works well dark. |

I almost forgot. Johnny Cash! Everything he covered was great. Especially the American Recordings. Like Beck "Rowboat", NIN "Hurt", Soundgarden "Rustycage".
Anything he sang was full of emotion. |

I made a great playlist at home of some of the best covers I've ever heard. On that list:
Failure- Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode) (AMAZING) Deftones- No Ordinary Love (Sade) The Darkness- Street Spirit (Radiohead) Local H- Toxic (Britney Spears) Smashing Pumpkins- You're All I've Got Tonight (The Cars) 1000 Homo DJs- Supernaut (Black Sabbath) Helmet- Army Of Me (Bjork) The Dandy Warhols- Hells Bells (AC/DC) Nine Inch Nails- Metal (Gary Numan) Living Color- Back In Black (AC/DC) MonoStar- Teardrop (Massive Attack) Nirvana- The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie) (I can't stand Nirvana, but this is a great cover) And the ones that didn't quite make it (i.e. they friggin SUCK): Sheryl Crow- Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses) A Perfect Circle- Imagine (John Lennon) (AWFUL) Lenny Kravitz- American Woman (Bachman Turner Overdrive) Nina Gordon (Ex-Veruca Salt)- Straight Outta Compton (N.W.A.) Orgy- Blue Monday (New Order) (This just makes me sad whenever I hear it) The Blank Theory- Sour Times (Portishead) Also, whoever the nu-metal band that did the cover of Phil Collin's "In The Air Tonight" needs to be dragged outside and shot. That's all for now. |

I knew the Gear Junkie would have the goods. Are you serious about Nina Gordon covering N.W.A.? I don't want to hear that!

I want to cover the Yaz song "No Connection" off of "Upstairs At Eric's". Even though it's an "electronic song" it's built on a blues progression and retains a bluesy mood. I'd like to play it on guitar in a rock format and see what it would sound like .... |

Weezer's cover of the Pixies song "Velouria" still amazes me. I love it when bands take a really good song and bring out the best things about it. In this songs case the counterpoint between the vocal melody and the guitar and bass line.

There are so many great cover songs. A few favorites are::::::::::::
AC/DC - Baby, Please Don't Go Martin Gore - Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth Gary Jules - Mad World Cardigans - Iron Man Death - Painkiller Metallica - Astronomy Faith No More - I Started A Joke Type O Negative - Summer Breeze I've done a couple covers in the studio, "Tits" by Sparks, and "Incarnated Solvent Abuse" by Carcass. Both were some of the most studio fun I've ever had. I think maybe it was nice to let go of the "oh my song, my baby" thing and just have fun. Aztec Camera did a jazz version of Van Halen's "Jump" that was really cool. Completely overshadowed everything else they did . . .
