haha that reminds me of the Beatles, how lennon and mccartney ripped off george harrisons "here comes the sun", with a more slowed down version "here comes the sun king" on the SAME album... (ok, its not exactly the same song, but very similar melody...) at least change the lyrics dudes!!! yeesh

It's totally Last Dance With Mary Jane if you ask me.

self plagiarism? ouch guess its a good idea, no matter how hungry one may be, NEVER sell them songs. say, i know he won the court case on that link, but on a different yet related note, isnt he actually prevented from playing all those old classic rock songs he sold? imagine that...

Just to bring this full circle Tom Petty took the main melody from Sweet Home Alabama from Skynnyrd slowed it down a bit and did Let's Dance With Mary Jane based on the main riff on that Skynnyrd song. One can go around in circles al day finding out who ripped off who but as long as the song is good it really shouldn't matter. The new Peppers song is still highly average sounding I mean forget the point of them plagiarizing, the song just plain reeks of adequacy and not having anything exceptional going on.

I'm not hearing the similarities between those two. Do you mean the chorus melodies because while they have slightly similar phrasing the intervals are fudamentally different.

It's hard to describe i do hear them very similar. To my ears the bass part in Petty's song sounds like the guitar and piano combo thing going on in Sweet Home, the guitar part in Petty's, ironically enough, sounds like Neil Young's "Southern Man" song . however, im just going by memory i wish i had the songs to hear to refresh my memory. The chorus in Petty's song is very similar to in phrasing with Sweet Home. I dunno I hear similarities all the time in music.
