. . . the band before us took all the soundcheck time up. So annoying. They were like "oh it doesn't sound right, I need more drum machine, can we do one more." I had no idea how to let them know they needed to get offstage. I gotta learn to deal with stuff like this. Anyways, our monitors ended up sucking but we played fine.

every band on the bill has loadin/soundcheck/set time allocated and strictly adhered to. there are forms to be filled out by the band pre-soundcheck. If they would like a certain effect they can have it. set list, stage plot, input list, instrumentation, song structure, leads, recording format desired, effects desired... all this gets documented by the band before they load onto the stage. NO house sound engineer does this kind of stuff around here. even just adhering to set times, let alone making the band fill out a form as to who sings lead and when the backups come in. i have heard about sound guys being caught sleeping.... the air of professionalism i have experienced in chicago reeks of beer and cigarettes. sorry about the seemingly OT rant |

Another issue is a sound person getting drunk. This has been disastrous for me.
The job either just doesn't pay enough or you get treated like badly by the owner to make people be totally serious about it. |

It's not as bad in Chicago as it is in smaller towns--I'm remembering back when I lived and played in Iowa City, and how many times the horrible horrible opening band would play for an hour just because nobody told them to stop earlier and they didn't know anything about show ettiquete. I'm thinking in particular of a band from Cedar Rapids called 'Whaleboy' that was basically Dave Matthews Creed.

my last show (last friday) my head and cabinet took a nose dive 3 seconds before our set was supposed to start. my 2x12 cab (with casters) was on top of my head's flight case. I turned up the master volume, turned around and the whole thing went CRASHING to the ground. One of my power tubes smashed, but luckily enough it was one of the outside tubes, so I was able to switch it from 100 watts to 60 watts (using only the two inside tubes) and play the show.
Crisis MAJORLY averted. Phew. |
