Has anybody been to the South Union Arts Center? I went there this weekend. They have a huge florescent Jesus above the stage, and it sounded great in there. Plus I'd been hearing bad stories about Brian Petersen but he was there just like I remember him from years ago puttin on a show for free and giving out cups of wine. He's a good guy.

So where is the South Union Arts Center?
Has anyone heard anything about the Cobra Bar (on Ashland by Lake) having live music? |

I went to this other new place called the Birdhouse. Near the old Camp Gay premises. Cleaner than the camp but stranger sounding. It has lots of tile and a really big rectangular room which probably sounds better full of people. |

South Union Arts is cool, though kind of in the middle of nowhere. My friend William Elliott Whitmore has played there a few times--it's a great venue for him because he does country/folk music that sounds like it was written during the Great Depression. I like seeing him there because there isn't a bunch of chatter like in a bar, plus the neon Jesus thing doesn't hurt matters. When I saw him there they switched on the Jesus right when his last song started, and it was a great effect.

Another one I like a lot is the Reversible Eye gallery. Uh... great name too. Seriously though, I played there and it was a blast. Everyone was dancing. I went to see the Coughs there and it got a little loud, but the place was packed and friendly. The key is it isn't a bar.

I saw Coughs at South Union Arts. Their sound actually worked well in that place. They sound best in a basement though.
