Hey,
I want to do some stereo micing. At the studios i have been to the method i like best is the mid-side method. Unfortunately i do not have a mic with a figure-eight pattern. I was wondering if i could use two of the same model cardioids (i have a stereo matched pair) and just line the capsules up one on top of the other. Would this work? If not what is the next best thing? |

Well, unfortunately that will not be true MID SIDE.
I would try a simple stereo X/Y placement to maximize the pickup from the microphones. Position the microphones so that the image of the sound source is picked up similarly in time. Although fudging MS with three cardioid mics is not true MS stereo I would not discourage you from giving it a try. I would assume that you were thinking of combining the cardioid mid with two cardioid pointed out of the side. If you have some free time to play with tones I would say try it out.
Note: to further fake the MS technique it might be worth trying to switch the polarity of one of the "side" mics. This might more closely approximate true mid-side. Of course it may end up sounding horrible, so just use those ears. |

i'm also looking into recording some vocals, i was hoping i could get some feedback on which is the best mic that is clearest for someone with a deeper voice. i know the spitguard helps a lot but i need godo clarity. shure a good brand?
