Default Coles-STC 4038

If you done much engineering or even reading (hehe), you should know about this mic. Great on LOTS of things. Its a ribbon and has a powerful magnet. Talk about it!

Used it on bone and sax along with an old RCA on trumpet. It made me wanna cry because I realized the only way to get the perfect horn section sound is with ribbons and it will be a a good number of years eating ramen before I can get one of my own.

This quote from Steve Albini rules:
"If you hear a 4038 distorting when used on a guitar amp, move it farther away from the speaker. If it still distorts, then it's the wrong mic for that guitar. You have to give up every now and again."
Apparently he owns ten of them.

i'd be too terrified to even try; but has anyone tried the royer mics? they sound fantastic on guitar cabs, and are "affordable".

I used the stereo royer sf12 as overhead mic on my recent album i recorded in miami, the guys at the GC down there were nice enough to loan it to me. i think its the best overhead mic ive used...had a really loud drummer, the sound is was even better than i expected.. but the biggest surprise was at how perfect the stereo imaging was.. it was beautiful.

i've never heard them used as overheads, but i'd imagine the sound to be flawless. they are made to stand up to high spls and not distort the ribbon.
